Buying each component by its pond-volume headline can still create a mismatch. Treat the water circuit as a chain.
The compatibility chain
1 · Pond requirement
Volume, fish load, turnover, waterfall and head.
2 · Pump at operating head
Delivered flow from the curve, not maximum flow.
3 · Filter flow window
The flow must remain within the filter’s safe range.
4 · UV exposure
Confirm the clarifier’s maximum intended flow.
5 · Pipe and return
Every connector and return must carry the selected flow.
Flow capacity is not biological capacity
A filter may pass the water physically but have insufficient media for a heavily stocked pond.
Compatibility checklist
- Pump meets required flow at total head.
- Flow stays within filter and UV limits.
- Biological capacity suits fish load.
- Connections avoid severe restriction.
- Gravity returns are never pressurised.
- Safe outdoor electrics and maintenance access are planned.
