Pond pump hose diameter guide

Choose practical hose diameters without needlessly restricting flow.

As flow increases, friction rises sharply in narrow hose. Two identical pumps can therefore deliver very different results.

Practical orientation

19 mm

Small water features and low flows over short runs.

25 mm

Common on compact ponds, but check restriction as length and flow rise.

32–38 mm

Often more sensible for medium filter pumps, longer runs and waterfalls.

50 mm

Large gravity or high-flow systems requiring system-specific design.

Four rules

  • Avoid immediately reducing the pump outlet without good reason.
  • Size for intended flow and the complete run.
  • Prefer swept bends to clusters of tight elbows.
  • Check filter inlet and outlet sizes before buying hose.

A stepped hosetail proves fit, not efficiency

The smallest step may connect physically while restricting the advertised flow severely.
